Location Research

We hope to vary our locations and use as many different random backgrounds to make our piece bright and bold and colourful!

The band footage will primarily be infront of bright, colourful wallpaper patterns. we will be shooting this in poppys house as she has a few different places in her house with patterned wallpaper and backgrounds that will be perfect for our video. This is where we will shoot our band scene together.

The ipod advert has been an inspiration for our video. We will use green screen and edit the footage on photoshop.

Green screen will be used in our video, we will use bright colours for a background we are going to use a vast ammount of green screening in our piece.

We are thinking of using a garden for one of our locations, the idea is to have bright flowers and possibly decking for a makeshift stage. We are also going to test this idea at night with spotlights and colour filters.

Test Footage

This is out test footage, we tested the use of the green and black screen. Also we had a shot of a guitar and also of people dancing. The editing is just a rough cut and the lip syncing isn't right but we hope this gives you a general idea of the end product we hope to achieve.

Test footage plan

We are currenlty planing a layout of our filming of our test footage and we are also deciding on what we are going to film and how we are going to present it..our production is going well and we hope that the filming also goes smoothly and includes an idea of what our piece will look like as it progresses!! this will be an indication of how our final piece could look in the future and we may keep concepts of what we film for our final piece.

Animatic

This is our animatic which we have edited and cut to fit our song sciene is golden! This is a rough idea of how we would like our video to look and what movements and shots we are hoping to use. We drew the pictures and have put them in a sequence that moves in time and to the beat of our song. We have edited the movement of the pictures using final cut express in order to get a clear idea of how the piece should look.

We are currently doing a media course at Long Road College, Cambridge in England. Our task this year is to make a music video and we have chosen your song- science is golden to create a music video to.

We really like your song and are currently writting a pitch for our ideas to submit to our teachers.
We are taking a different approach to our music video to what you did, however we got some great inspiration from yours! Its very unique!

Hopefully when we have completed our video in a few months time you could take a look at it and give us your opinions, it could even feature on your myspace page!!!!

Speak to you soon

Info on band-

The Grates are a three-piece band from Brisbane, Australia, with band members Patience Hodgson (vocals), John Patterson (guitar) and Alana Skyring (drums). They have been lauded for their catchy songs and enthusiastic and energetic live shows, as Patience spends much of the time bouncing around, even while singing. Their music is frequently described as 'fun'. There songs have been compared to the sounds of the 'Yeah Yeah Yeahs'

They released an array of limited edition recordings before releasing what is referred to as their debut EP, The Ouch. The Touch, in Australia on 14 February 2005. The EP received a United Kingdom release two months later via the Captains of Industry collective.

Their debut album, Gravity Won't Get You High, was released on April 8, 2006. It debuted at #9 in the ARIA charts and reached a peak of #9. It has also been released in the UK and the United States (June 2006). The first single off the album, "19 20 20", was released in March as a 7" and iTunes music download.

They have been growing in popularity since being invited to perform at the 2006 Big Day Out Australian leg. They also launched on a national tour in the first half of 2006 and have supported The Zutons in their 2006 UK tour, The Young Knives in 2006, The Go! Team in 2005/2006 and Arctic Monkeys in their 2006 tour of Australia.

new videos for inspiration

Madonna- Give it 2 me
This video has lots of elements which we want in our video. The bright colours and still images. We have decided to use to still colourful images changing to the beat. Also the different scaled performers and the split screens and doubled images.

The Ting Tings- Great DJ
We liked the repeated image of the singer behind one another, and the rolling images (upwards) also the colourful backgrounds.

Ipod Advert
We liked the stylised edit of the dancers and the bright colours used, this could be done in a very upbeat way. We feel that it will be an interesting idea to follow through.

Storyboard

Our shot list
Shot 1:
The first shot is going to be of a drum kit, this will be a close up and then zoom out or switch to another footage e.g the singer. This will be done to the beat of song because at the start of the song has quite a strong beat.
Shot 2:
Clapping is also used in the beginning of the song so we will also have close up of clapping, this will give the audience a visual to see, we will also be switching between the footage of different instruments.
Shot 3:
A shot of a guitar being played will also be shot and used. This will be our introduction to the song to introduce the band members and it will be an interesting way to begin to song. This will consist of close ups and mid shots mainly.
Shot 4:
When the lyrics start there will be a shot of the singer independently, then infront of the band in a mid shot.
Shot 5:
This is a shot of dancers in a 'Ipod advert style' with bright colours and upbeat dancing. We also have an idea of editing this shot so it makes it more interesting such as doubling the dancers and have different shots for example a close up.
Shot 6:
The whole group will be used in this section, edited in a split screen style and possibly edited with bright colours. This will be mainly used in the chorus.
Shot 7:
This shot was inspired by a student video created last year 'Turn it up' we will have a spotlight with changing colours and a mic with singers. The mic will be hung from the ceiling or on a mic stand.
Shot 8:
Inspired by the Miley Cyrus '7 things' video and the Madonna 'Give it 2 me' video, we will have the band and the singer in shot. However, the different performers will be at different scales so some performers are bigger than others.
Shot 9:
Keeping some elements of the original video, we will have a section of animated performance. This could consist of anything abstract and odd.
Shot 10:
Because the song is called 'Science is golden' we thought it would be fun to add an element of science into the song. Therefore, the band will dress up in lab coats and 'do tests' on a male. We will keep this upbeat by dancing and singing while we are doing this. Colourful test tubes will be used as props.
Shot 11:
This shot will be just of the band singing and dancing around. Close ups, mid shots and long shots will be used. Possibly still be in the lab costumes.
Shot 12:
Similar to the Ting Tings 'Great DJ' video, when we have a beat that goes well, we will repeat the singer over and over to create lots of them. Also members of the band will be repeated.
Shot 13:
We will use still images and edit them to make them look like Polaroids from all the scenes and one by one they will be animated to fall in to the shot and will pile on top of one another. This will be similar to a scrapbook of the band while filming, but to a beat.
Shot 14:
This shot will be still images of the band and singer in different positions and moved quickly in a slideshow style. This is similar to the Madonna 'Give it 2 me' video.
Shot 15:
The last shot will be of the male partipant in the science scene, will have duct tape on his mouth with the words 'Science is Golden'. We have chosen to do this because the title is a play on the saying 'silence is golden' we will zoom into the tape on his mouth then it will finish.

Costumes:
Bright clothing, high heels, Skinny jeans, shorts, bright tops, bright nails, bright make-up, lab coats, science goggles, glasses, big jewelry and big hair styles.
Throughout the video there will be lots of costume changes. The style we are also going to base our cotume design around is THE TING TINGS!!!

PITCH- Science is Golden by The Grates

We feel Science is Golden is a Pop/indie Rock tune, with a contemporary feel to it. This is what we want our music video to be seen as, which shows modern, artistic and abstract ideas, as well as traditional narrative and with a band.

We have many ideas which we want to create. These include:

- As it is sung by a band we would like to incorporate this. We would want it to look like a live performance with the band members smartly dressed. This would be a narrative approach but we feel we could use a performance and abstract ideas together. This would be with a band, performing some parts on the song, close ups of each performer. Real instruments will be used.

-We want to make sure that we get lots of aspects of the live performance, which we want to do outside and in many different locations. We want to play around and edit the live performance footage to get many different feels to it so it isn’t all the same. We want the performance to have bright lights and a modern feel to it.

- We want to create a 'rock chick' feel with the way we perform and with what we wear. We want to be seen in bright colours, with a fair amount of costume changes.

-We have lots of ideas for a performance shoot with lights outside.

- We feel that the song is quite contemporary and alternative therefore we are going to interpret that by editing the footage with different effects and techniques.

- We have also thought about having different people signing to add some variety.

- Spotlighting and other lighting in general we feel would create an interesting effect to add to our video. By using different lights in shapes and colours.

- After looking at the official video to 'Science is Golden' we got inspiration and decided to put in some green screen and photoshop effects.

-Our overall look for the video is quite simple with most of our locations and shots with a simple background and having the focus on the band it self.

Miley Cyrus- 7 things
This video has element of what we hope to achieve in our video, such as the band, simple background,close-ups and also the different girls appearing in the video.

This music video is a previous student example. We like the bright lighting they have used and the focus on one person singing the lyrics. It shows different girls singing which adds variety which was one of our original ideas.

SONG LYRICS-
The lyrics for science is golden are listed below and are quite repetitive, however we could focus on the lyrics for some parts which would add to a part of the story of the performance.

What's the go with all these
New set of rules that you live by?
'Fraid you might die..
Watch 'em go by..
What's the go with all you
Scence sucking fuckers?
You're so high..Yeah, you're so high..
Watch 'em go, watch 'em go, watch 'em go-o by..
Sleeping orders won't
Get you through the door
You want more..
Watch 'em go by..
Slippery lips aint
Dancing chips in the meantime
You dream of lies..
Watch 'em go, watch 'em go, watch 'em go-o by..
I don't know why you lead me out to follow
I don't know why you lead me outside, because
Science is golden!Science is golden!
Watch yourself, 'cause science is golden!
I don't know why you lead me out to follow
I don't know why you lead me outside, because
Science is golden!Science is golden!
Watch yourself, 'cause science is golden!
Science, science, science is golden
Science, science, science is golden
Science, science, science is golden
Science, science, science is golden
Science, science, science is golden
(Watch 'em go by)
Science, science, science is golden
(Watch 'em go by)
Science, science, science is golden
(Watch 'em go by)
Science, science, science
(Watch 'em go by...)
Science is golden!Science is golden!

We do have some ideas for locations. Poppy's house has many white walls with bright lights which we want to perform infront of. ALso there is a decked area outside with lighting which will be ideal for our outside performance. Pictures to come!
